The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) nicknamed 'Auntie' is a public channel. It is financed by the state and is the sole beneficiary of the television licence fee. It receives income from the sale of programmes as well as from a vast range of publications. The BBC manuals on the production of television programmes are regarded as the industry standard worldwide

The channel's content is often of variable quality featuring everything from critically acclaimed period drama to Australian soap operas. 'Auntie' normally avoids the worst excesses of game shows and 'reality TV but high quality content is now increasingly sacrificed in the quest for higher viewing figures. Though there are of course cost considerations (the production of original drama costs around £500,000 per hour, whereas the repeat screening of a programme bought from another channel may only cost £13,000 per hour) the BBC has been widely criticised, in recent years, for 'dumbing down' the quality of their output. It has an annual budget in excess of £2,000,000,000 and one of the biggest web sites on the net. Last year they spent around £110,000,000 on it.

BBC 2  http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/
This channel has a narrower target audience than BBC 1 and programming is often more innovative and experimental. The best comedies and dramas (such as 'This Life' & 'Black Adder') often start here before moving to BBC 1 when they become more popular.
Carlton  www.carlton.com/
Carlton is a commercial channel and makes no apology for its shameless pursuit of market share. It is responsible for such gems as 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' - which has since been franchised out to most countries in the developed world. It is a regional channel responsible for part of ITV's production.
ITV  www.itv.co.uk/
This channel is in effect a network which broadcasts the production of a number of companies, as well as its own.. Among the most popular of its programmes is Granada Television's Coronation Street - which goes out at least 3 times a week. This soap opera about working class people from The North regularly attracts over 13,000,000 viewers.
Channel 4 www.channel.com/
Channel 4 is a sort of private BBC 2. It is probably still the most radical and 'trendy' channel but has fallen victim to the charms of reality TV and was partly responsible for bringing the world 'Big Brother'. Generally however, through shows like 'Euro Trash' it walks the fine line between Kitsch humour and bad taste with a great degree of skill.
Channel 5 www.channel5.co.uk
Channel 5 often occupies the same market position as The Sun - attracted as it is to sex, scandal and crime. As such it has become the target of every satirist. The absence of quality broadcasting is, however, as much the result of a lack of funds as a conscious pursuit of the lowest common denominator.
